British Council´s work with accessing arts for disabled people as audiences and artists.
Presentation by Ben Evans, British Council’s Head of Arts & Disability in the European Union region.
As the British Council’s Head of Arts & Disability in the European Union region, Evans coordinates a transnational project building links between disabled artists and between organisations seeking to transform access to the arts for disabled people as audiences and artists. This includes the website and newsletter www.disabilityartsinternational.org
After training as a theatre director, Evans was Director of Theatre at London’s Oval House specialising in supporting the work of artists underrepresented elsewhere in British theatre – including Deaf and disabled artists. He then worked as a freelance producer, before joining the British Council – first as a Drama and Dance adviser for EU Europe and sub-Saharan Africa, and subsequently as Head of Arts in Portugal. Evans was also Project Director of an EU-funded four-country project supporting Deaf & disabled performing artists entitled ‘Unlimited Access’.
