Choreographer Deborah Hay has created a new work for the Cullberg Ballet set to newly composed sound score by electronic music maestro Laurie Anderson.

Think of the sea. What do you see? The stage as a sea of endless possibilities. A dancer as a sea of endless possibilities. 21 dancers (16 from Cullberg and 5 guests) perform in this cult encounter between two of the biggest names in performance art, where nothing is left to chance. Figure a Sea challenges, without limiting, the dancers’ intelligence, beauty and speed, opening up a flow of the undefined, for dancers and audience alike.

American choreographer Deborah Hay constantly challenges the perception of dance. With roots in the experimental Judson Dance Theatre of the 1960s, she has attained cult status among choreographers. She was one of the first to use ordinary movement patterns, now a milestone in dance history. During her long career Hay has worked with, among others, Merce Cunningham and choreographed work for artists such as Mikhail Baryshnikov.

American composer and musician Laurie Anderson began her career as a sculptor and performance artist. She is a pioneer in electronic music, with popular as well as art music among her creations. She has collaborated with William Burroughs, Peter Gabriel and Lou Reed, among many others.

”What my body can do is limited, this is not a bad thing because how I choreograph frees me from those limitations. Writing is then how I reframe and understand the body through my choreography” /Deborah Hay
