The format appears as a structure held in tension: sometimes it cracks, sometimes it solidifies, sometimes it barely manages to stay upright. Through voice, dance and non-verbal forms of expression, I am interested in being in the oscillation where the language trembles, spills out or suddenly solidifies, as if it wants to control what it names. On stage, residues, intensities and excesses accumulate without seeking closure, but instead persist in their instability. The performance develops as a field of tension between exposure, erosion and opacity.

OM:

Manuel Rodríguez is an Andalusian artist working in dance, performance and visual arts. He holds a Master's degree in New Performative Practices from Stockholm University of the Arts (SKH). His work explores how the body and the voice can become sites of thinking, capable of changing perception and opening up new relationships between the sensual, the poetic and the political. Working with movement, breath, vibration, voice, images, objects and installation, Manuel develops choreographic situations where the body loses its fixed function and enters processes of displacement and transformation. Based on a sustained commitment to craft, and influenced by science fiction, ritual, post-humanism and forms of writing characterised by erasure, drift and illegibility, his work approaches opacity as a form of resistance, where fixed interpretations are suspended and the grip of clarity as a means of control is loosened.

Manuel has created more than 15 stage works, alongside photographic, audiovisual and installation-based projects. One of the central methods is improvisation, which is seen as a means of freeing the body's potential from the limitations of the analytical mind. It is not a completely free improvisation, but a controlled one, where specific tasks, rules and frameworks are used to shake up the dancers” learned behaviours. Improvisation allows for the creation of complex movements that involve so many factors that they would be impossible to repeat or write down. ZOO goes beyond the individual and develops a work around the group, around the ”body” of all the dancers, or what could be called the ”social body'. While the exploration of the individual body emphasises diversity, the work with the group aims at cohesion, communication and contact. The dancers' bodies are coordinated through flexible and responsive organisational principles, promoting an order based on the mutual trust between the dancers rather than on individual authority.

OM:

After dancing for Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, David Zambrano and Pierre Droulers, founded Mr Thomas Hauert (b. 1967, CH) 1997 ZOO company in Brussels with dancers Sarah Ludi, Samantha van Wissen, Mat Voorter and Mark Lorimer.
