Fredrik Rydman's reinterpretation of Tchaikovsky's classic has played to sold-out houses, received critical acclaim and taken cities such as London, Paris and Moscow by storm. The enchanted swans of the original tale are now sex workers in patent leather boots and platinum blonde wigs, the magician a pimp. Tchaikovsky's beautiful music sits alongside new songs by, among others. Salem Al Fakir, Moneybrother and Adiam Dymott. Some of Sweden's greatest street dancers bring the story to life through vouging, hip hop and breaking.
The fact that the dancing takes place on the concrete and in the living room makes Swan Lake an epic and captivating tale. The battle between good and evil is still at the centre, but the desire for drugs gives the 19th century love story a new perspective. Can love break the spell, as in the original?
