French collective (LA)HORDE puts protest, revolution and rebellion on stage. Together with French electro star Rone and with 18 dancers from Ballet national de Marseille is Room With A View a frenetic revolt in a vibrant techno universe.
Room With A View is a white leaf. A quarry. A white cube on the edge of civilisation where anything can happen. A collapse, or a new start? An electro-dance experience filled with references to Italian Renaissance sculptors, science fiction and Greta Thunberg.
We meet a flock of desperate anarchists who will do anything to challenge boundaries. With shards from the neo-circus and rave as well as the street and nightclub dance universe, chaos suddenly becomes something hopeful.
In just a few albums, the Rone secured his place as one of the most influential French producers in electro. For the performance Room with a View, he was keen to work with (LA)HORDE and consequently with the dancers of the Ballet National de Marseille. This collaboration marks his first step into the field of performing arts.
The three artists
(LA)HORDE is a collective consisting of Marine Brutti, Jonathan Debrouwer and Arthur Harel. They have been working together since 2013 on film, video installations, theatre direction and choreographic creation. Since 2019, the trio has been linked to the Ballet National de Marseille as an artistic team. (LA)HORDE visited Dansens Hus as recently as 2019 with the performance To Da Bone about the Youtube phenomenon jumpstyle.
Through films and performances (Novaciéries, 2015; The Master's Tools, 2017; Cultes, 2019) and choreographic works (To Da Bone, 2017; Marry Me in Bassiani, 2019; Room With A View, 2020), (LA)HORDE highlights the political aspect of dance. They map different choreographic forms of rebellion, ranging from rave and jumpstyle to traditional dance.
The collective explores the dance that takes place online, on social media and on digital platforms. By analysing its dynamics and representation, they have created a new concept they call "post-internet dance". Through a variety of formats, (LA)HORDE questions the endless possibilities of this new territory.
In 2021, the group invited the Ballet national de Marseille and several choreographers to create a mixed programme. Choreographers such as Lucinda Childs, Tania Carvalho, Lasseindra Ninja, and Oona Doherty were each asked to embody their own iconic, inclusive, and engaged approach to dance.
