Alain Platel's Belgian company Les Ballets C de la B is one of Europe's most influential companies. Now he's back at Dansens Hus with nine dancers and a collection of horse carcasses in the darkly dystopian do not sleep. A work inspired by Gustav Mahler's music and the time he lived in at the beginning of the last century; a Europe filled with unrest, persecution and nationalism - not unlike today's society.
Composer Steven Prengels has created an evocative soundscape. Mahler's music mixes with African songs, cobra calls and the sounds of sleeping animals. With set designer Berlinde De Bruyckere's pile of dead horses, the two together create a brutal world where bodies collide, merge, and are pulled out. A dance of life and death.
The last time Les Ballets C de la B visited Dansens Hus was last autumn when they took the energetically infectious Badke made it all the way from the stage to our foyer. When they return, it is with a completely different tone and theme.
