The rage within me. The rage caused by others. The rage that devours all that was precious. The rage that burns. The rage that cleans. The rage that creates.

In Beyond Rage dancer and choreographer Benno Voorham places himself at the centre of the anger. Powerful and uncontrollable. Intense and passionate. What really comes afterwards? What does the landscape look like after the devastating anger has passed; when we have to pick up the broken pieces and rebuild our lives? Based on a deeply personal approach, in Beyond Rage a poetic, visual and thoughtful dance performance by and with Benno Voorham. He puts us in a dense pressure cooker of energies, where glowing video projections unfold before our feet. Fury vibrates, but on the other side is a heartfelt search for beauty that can provide a moment of solace in an otherwise dystopian world.

Benno Voorham on "Beyond Rage".

In February 2022, as Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, I was in Murmansk, Russia, to direct the project "The Factory of Lost and Found Dreams". When I heard the news of the invasion, I was totally consumed by anger.
A few months later, during the summer of 2022, I had a three-month residency at the Swedish Arts Grants Committee and started what became "Beyond Rage". During the residency, however, my focus shifted from exploring the anger itself to reflecting on what comes afterwards. Taking a deep breath and asking ourselves: "Where do we want to go from here?"

The starting point for this new solo performance is the dancing body. I work with movement in a musical, sensory, poetic and dramaturgical way. I want to create dance material that is articulate, evocative and imaginative.

About Benno Voorham

Benno Voorham is an international dancer, choreographer and dance teacher from the Netherlands, living in Stockholm since 1995. Since graduating from the School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam in 1986, he has worked internationally as an independent dance artist, both with his own work and in collaboration with others. Since moving to Sweden, much of his work has taken place in countries of the former Soviet Union (Baltic States, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus and Georgia).

In recent years he has choreographed works for, and with, teenagers and young adults. His projects include HOME (2012/2013) with children from orphanages in Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus, Waiting in the Margins (2014/2015) with internal refugees in Georgia, and Revolving doors (2017) with refugees from Afghanistan in Gothenburg.

In 2018/2019 he started the performance project Tomorrow's Witnesses with elderly World War II survivors and young refugees in Norway, Sweden and Finland. In 2022 he premiered his first full-evening solo The Other Selves, a reflection on ageing.

In his work as a dancer and choreographer, Voorham strives to develop a multifaceted understanding of how the body can move and how an audience can read and understand movement. His work is always set in a socio-political context and is often about how we interact with each other.

Together with Sybrig Dokter, he is one of the founders of LAVA-Dansproduktion, an internationally active dance organisation based in Stockholm.
