French street dance has been a feature of several previous seasons at Dansens Hus. In September, we present the hip hop company Chute Libre, which now makes its Swedish debut on our big stage with its very own, urban version of Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring", entitled "In Bloom".

There is not the traditional female sacrifice to the gods, but instead a family ("tribe") who let loose and blossom together. Each dancer in the company represents a hip hop style, here in a contemporary context.

History of "Spring victims"

When 'The Rite of Spring' was first performed in 1913 by the Russian Ballet in Paris, it attracted a lot of attention. Both Stravinsky's music and the dance itself were perceived as so provocative that the audience collapsed. There was an uproar in the auditorium and the theatre had to call the police.
Today, Stravinsky's music is considered one of the most influential musical pieces of the 20th century. However, the ballet itself fell into oblivion. Partly because it was not performed, and partly because the innovative choreographer Nijinsky did not write down how the work should be performed.
In 1987, the scandalous work finally saw the light of day again. This followed an 18-year-long reconstruction, which the American company Joffrey Ballet was finally allowed to perform.
