Rarely has Dansens Hus's main stage been more star-studded than during the world premiere of "Dialogues" - a full evening of duets by six of the world's leading choreographers: Ohad Naharin, Crystal Pite, Mats Ek, Sasha Waltz, Emma Portner and Jiří Kylián. Six choreographers who define both the present and the future of contemporary dance.
They each contribute a work to this festive evening created by the Norwegian Opera & Ballet in Oslo and Productions Sarfati.
After the world premiere at Dansens Hus, the show will tour to St Petersburg, Moscow, Oslo and Paris.
SASHA WALTZ: IMPROMPTUS
Berlin-based Sasha Waltz, known for his groundbreaking and often spectacular performances, is recognised as one of the most important innovators in contemporary dance today. I "Impromptus" she explores human intimacy to music by Schubert. Dancers Claudia de Serpa Soares and Gyung Moo Kim are from her own ensemble Sasha Waltz & Guests.
EMMA PORTNER: ISLANDS
Emma Portners CVs range from choreographing Justin Bieber, to being named Young Choreographer of the Year by the American Dance Awards.
She has been widely recognised for her collaborations with Apple, Netflix, The Guggenheim Museum, Vogue, Sony Studios and artists ranging from mega-star Justin Bieber to indie artists such as Maggie Rogers, Blood Orange and Sylvan Esso.
For this evening, Emma Portner joins us with the duet "Islands" danced by Whitney Jensen and Samantha Lynch, both dancers from the Norwegian National Ballet. The duet had its world premiere at Oslo Opera in 2020 in the very last performance before the pandemic shut down operations. "Her way of sculpting with bodies is striking," wrote the Norwegian critic Aftenposten.
MATS EK: JULIA & ROMEO
Enjoy the heartbreaking love duet from the hit film 'Juliet and Romeo'. Verona is a city plagued by family feuds, failed conspiracies and street violence. At the centre of this turbulence, two young people from competing families fall in love. An unstoppable love, a forbidden love, but a love that with its destruction puts an end to the rivalry.
CRYSTAL PITE: ANIMATION
The New York Times has described Canadian Crystal Pite as one of the foremost and most fascinating choreographers of our time, and she has created choreography for some of the world's leading dance scenes. A new work by her is a major event, and it is with great pleasure that we can now present a world premiere from Pite. The duet is danced by two dancers from her own company: Gregory Lau and Renée Sigouin.
Later this spring, Canadian Crystal Pite comes to Dansens Hus' main stage with her own company Kidd Pivot and the performance "Auditor". But we are already giving you a taste of her fascinating world.
JIŘÍ KYLIÁN: 14'20''
"14´20" is an extract from '27:52', one of Jiří Kylián's most characteristic pieces. The duet is as long as the title indicates, and the theme is also time. Time which, according to Kylián himself, governs our lives even though we don't even know how to define it.
Our life seems to be determined by time - But "time" is a very abstract term! We do not know what time is.
All this is possible, but one thing us sure: our time is determined by two minuscule moments: The moment in which we are born and the moment in which we die.
The work I made is not only about "time". It is also about "speed", about "love" and about "aging".
OHAD NAHARIN: B/OLERO
Ohad Naharin, artistic director of the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv, brings dancers Maayan Shienfeld and Rani Lebzelter from her own company to perform a powerful version of Ravel's "Bolero" in an electronic music arrangement by Isao Tomita.
